It is with love, as it is with all things, that it is better to give than to receive. The kind of love we seek is 'kindness' itself. The particular action of love 'giving' or 'receiving' is secondary to the primary function of 'love' itself.
Do unto others, even if they don't do unto you. If you've been hurt, love enough to not hurt others who want it. If you've been helped, love enough to help others who need it.
If you've not found comfort in someone's arms, wrap your arms around another and provide comfort for them. In doing so, you will find the very comfort you were seeking all along.
At the end of the day, I live to love. In doing so, I love to live.
